Grand Cherokee Technical Service Bulletins & Recalls

2011-up models

Technical Service Bulletins Recalls Additional service issues & tips

The following Service Bulletin data is provided strictly for informational purposes only, to assist owners to find out if a particular problem they may be experiencing with their vehicles has been addressed with a factory service bulletin. If a listed problem or symptom is present or suspected, owners should consult their authorized Jeep service department for the latest up to date bulletins and proper procedures. Repairs, adjustments or modifications described in these TSB's should be done by qualified service personnel only, especially when relating to safety and drivability issues. For a detailed explanation of TSB's, see this article from Edmunds.com: You, Your Vehicle and the Technical Service Bulletin.

SERVICE BULLETINS ARE NOT A WARRANTY ITEM FOR VEHICLES OUT OF WARRANTY. It is important to note that "Preventive" service repairs will generally not be performed under warranty during the normal warranty period if a vehicle is not exhibiting the particular symptom or problem. TSB's are not recalls. If you ask your dealer to perform the modification outside of the warranty period, expect to pay for the labor and parts.

Service Bulletin numbering

Example: TSB # 18-004-10A
18 004 10 A
Category
(1st 2 digits)
Bulletin sequence
(middle 2 or 3 digits)
Year issued
(last 2 digits)
Revision
(letter at end)

Bulletin numbering: The first two digits of all TSB numbers represent the category group. The middle two (or three) digits denote the category issue sequence, while the last two represent the calendar year in which the TSB was issued. In the example above, bulletin # "18-004-10A" is in the "Performance" category, and was the 4th Chrysler TSB released for this category in calendar year 2010. A letter at the very end, starting with "A", designates a revision and/or update, and supersedes the prior bulletin.

Additional service issues, tips and information

Apple iPad not compatible with UConnect
The Apple iPad is not compatible with Uconnect when connected to the vehicle’s USB port or ipod control cable located in the glove box or center console. The iPad will display the following message: “This device is not supported by the iPad”. UConnect system may display “Reading” and / or “Error” on the radio display.

Bluetooth Streaming Audio from iPad plays with no issue. However, seek up and seek down buttons on the radio are not supported by the iPad. Seek up and seek down operation can be exercised using the iPad itself.

Apple IPhone4 - Audio issues playing audio files
Customers may complain that while playing audio files from apple iPhone4, the sound will drop out or fail to play. Chrysler and Apple Inc. are jointly investigating this issue. Timing for a resolution from Apple and Chrysler is TBD.

The following solution should be suggested to customers in the interim:

Step 1: Turn the vehicle off
Step 2: Turn the iPhone4 off and on.
Step 3: Turn the vehicle on, and wait 30 seconds
Step 4: Connect the iPhone4 to vehicle's USB port (in glove box or center console) using the USB cable that came with the iPhone4 (generally the cable is White in color). Make sure that customers are using their device via USB port located in glove box or in the center console and not via the USB port on the radio faceplate.
Step 5: Press "Media" button on the radio and use the system in iPod (USB) mode (and not in Bluetooth Streaming mode)

Also, advise customers to minimize use of seek up and seek down keys; and when they are used, try not to press them multiple consecutive times. Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) - override access door
The override access door is located under the center console cup holder mat. Pull up on the cup holder mat, remove the access door, and use a long slim tool such as a screwdriver to push down on the override lever; the shifter knob will be able to be moved.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Clicking Noise
The driver may notice a clicking sound coming from the front or underneath the vehicle. This occurs when the vehicle is traveling above 35 mph and during the first portion of a drive cycle. The ESC system will run a calibration routine and if the driver lifts off of the gas pedal, the ESC system will stop the test because the drive may need to brake. The clicking sound is the valves in the ESC system. Once the calibration routine is successful, the noise will not return until the next ignition cycle. Once the ESC system has learned 50 times, the calibration will not be run during every ignition cycle. The sound may also become less noticeable over time. This sound is normal and no service needs to be done.

Liftgate - Intermittent operation
Some customers may bring their 2011 Grand Cherokee in with a complaint of intermittent Liftgate Operation. When trying to open their liftgate with any of the methods available (FOBIK, Interior switch or liftgate switch), the liftgate may not open. It is important to note if the liftgate glass is ajar, the gate will NOT open. Some customers may mistakenly cause the liftgate glass to be ajar by pushing the FOBIK button by accident. Most customers would not realize this as the glass does not pop off the lifgate when ajar. If the EVIC is monitored, it will indicate an ajar condition. All that is needed is customer explanation on the operation of the liftgate. Later this year, a new FOBIK will be released eliminating the liftgate glass button.

Locking fuel door - Manual release
The fuel door is unlocked by pressing the fuel door release button below the headlamp switch. The system is a simple switch and actuator system that is not controlled by a module. If there is an electrical fault with the system, there is a manual release cable under the left rear storage compartment in the rear quarter panel.

Lug nuts - Locking
The current locking wheel nuts for previous year (2010 & earlier) Grand Cherokees are not compatible with the 2011 Grand Cherokee. If a customer wants a set of locking wheel nuts, do NOT use the current set available for earlier year Grand Cherokees. Locking Wheel Lug nuts will be available for the 2011 Grand Cherokee late in September 2010.

Quadra-Lift Air Suspension - Caution when lifting vehicle on hoist or jack
The air suspension system uses a high pressure volume of air to operate the system. To avoid possible personal injury or damaging air suspension components, please ensure technicians are made aware that subject vehicles equipped with air suspension should never be lifted on a hoist or jack while the engine is running unless the automatic levelling system was previously disabled. The system can be disabled by pressing and holding both the “UP” and “DOWN” buttons simultaneously between 5 and 10 seconds. A message will appear in the EVIC stating levelling has been disabled immediately after both buttons are released. Driving the vehicle over 5 mph (8 km/h) will return the air suspension to normal operation.

If for any reason the vehicle is hoisted without entering the Automatic Leveling Disabled Mode, the module notes the speed at which the suspension height is changing when the vehicle is raised, tries for a few seconds to adjust the height, and then disables the automatic leveling system. An active fault in the air suspension system results in an air suspension system message display in the EVIC.

Quadra-Lift - Air Suspension Over Temperature Message in the Electronic Vehicle Information Center
When the air suspension compressor has to run for a significant period of time or the air suspension system is being used a lot by the driver, the compressor may need to cool down. This is normal and should not require service. There are times when the system will need to make up a significant amount of air. This can occur with large changes in ambient air temperature or if service has been done on the system and lost air has not been replaced.

A message will be displayed on the EVIC indicating the compressor is cooling down and there will be a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) set. The DTC in the ASCM module does not necessarily indicate service is needed. If the EVIC message and DTC occurs often, it may be an indication of a leak in the system.

Shift knob removal process
Lower the trim ring under shifter knob, use a small punch or screw driver to remove the roll pin from the shaft. Blanket the area with a suitable towel to ensure the roll pin is not lost during the removal process.

Steering wheel remote radio switch sticks
Replace switch if vehicle was built before 07-11-2010.

Water leaking - running down the center inside of the backlight/glass
Remove spolier attachment screws on the inner side of the glass and the two at the hinges. Roll the spoiler toward the roof of the vehicle. Remove the outer harness retained at the lower half of the spoiler allowing spoiler to extend out of the way. Inspect the grommit for proper fit to the glass. Apply Kent High Tech Clear P10567 to the grommit face to glass sealing area and harness to grommit inner areas. Allow proper cure time as instructed.
